If anything the world which now fits into ones pocket just keeps getting closer. To keep it from closing in altogether, we need to carve out places within ourselves. An architecture that holds personal meaning, containing symbols one can identify with easily. Symbols that are both simple and layered with meaning, and most of all linked comfortingly with ones personal or professional experience. Consider the symbols one associates with growth, or justice, or peace, or sacrifice, or service. It could be any or all of these, or any other, just as it could be a religious symbol, but it does not need to be. Anything that absorbs the mind: engages the mischievous child, tempers the ardent youth, steers the rebel, challenges the ambitious adult, inspires the wise elder, all of whom and more are within us. And it could be a phrase with a deeper meaning. Uplifting strains of music, calmer breaths, strenuous work. Anything that connects, making us kinder and more resolute versions of ourselves, cannot be too far from the right balance we seek.
